I recently had the pleasure of designing a DVD cover for Randy Wood, who is a legend in his own right, having built guitars and instruments for such artists as Elvis Presley, Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Vasser Clements, Clarence White, Bill Monroe and Emmy Lou Harris. You can read more about Randy here.
David Grant, associate producer for the DVD, approached me about the design for the DVD, which was to feature live performances from a Low Country Jazz concert on the premises of Wood’s guitar shop at his Pickin’ Parlor.
For this design, I went with something that picked up on the old-fashioned aesthetic of the guitar shop and stage area—wood, low lights, country, weathered. The design also speaks to the music. This isn’t New Orleans Dixieland jazz, but rather acoustic renditions of a variety of jazz tunes, with a touch of bluegrass.
The inside features bios of the four prominent musicians on stage that night—Jeff Autry, Tony Williamson, Ben Tucker, and Don Stiernberg—and a photo of the front of Wood’s shop.
The product was truly an enjoyable one, and David had these nice comments about our collaboration:
“Josh’s design skills were a great asset in helping us to successfully release our label’s first DVD. Not only did he nail the look we were seeking, but he was always responsive and easy to work with.”
