The purpose of this assignment in Advanced Typography was to use only typography and color to illustrate the concept of a musical group’s poster and to convey a sense of the musician or group’s style of music. In addition, the instructor asked students to pick two musicians whose styles represented contrasting genres.
My first poster is a design for Christian singer Audrey Assad. I would describe her sound as folksy, expressive, and very lyrical. Each line of a song is very poetic. The idea for this concept came from her song entitled “Show Me.” In one stanza Assad sings, “So let me go like a leaf upon the water …” I used that imagery to generate the typographical concept of the poster.
Using letters and words from that stanza, I created a series of Photoshop brushes and painted the abstract leaf outline and water ripples. Shades of pinks and purples are soft and guide the eye downward to the name and date of the “concert.” In the background I’ve also used an enlarged and blurred version of the text to offer a sense of reflection in the water.
I also used a subtle background texture to add visual interest and unify the overall design. This poster was selected by staff at Sessions to appear in the monthly student gallery.
The second poster was designed for metal group Demon Hunter. One of the group’s more popular songs is “Storm the Gates of Hell,” and I wanted to take imagery of the lyrics and show something metallic and grungy. The typeface is a modified version of a font called SoulStalker. I created this modified version in Illustrator, once again using custom brushes and shapes to add to the overall effect.
There also is a secondary layer of meaning: The shape is actually an abstract representation of Demon Hunter’s logo. The background text is composed of the lyrics of the song and is set upon a textured and gradient-filled dark background. The red tips of the horns are a visual cue corresponding to the group’s name, venue, and date at the bottom.
